Dense walls of guitar sounds and the ethereal vocals of bass player Lea Sonnek – the comparison with Sonic Youth suggests itself, shoe gaze elements are also undeniable. But this doesn’t quite describe it all: the music of the Austrian quartet also draws inspiration from various post-rock acts of the 1990s, as can be deduced from song lengths beyond seven minutes and cunning drum beats.
This is their brand new album “Locust Valley”. It comes with ten songs. The music on “Locust Valley” is very special. Hella Comet is taking you into a different world with the unique sounds and vocals. Somehow it seems as if the arrangements are in the focus, rather than the vocals. The melodies are odd and somehow hypnotizing. The sound is almost experimental. Sometimes distorted, sometimes clean, but always dreamy and far away. Hella Comet try the oddest combinations in their arrangements. Almost like a recorded jam session, “Locust Valley” seems absolutely spontaneous, yet well planned.
The brand new Hella Comet is a interesting new release. Different from everything you have ever heard before. But it is sure worth a listen. And if you are into experimental music or music that can hypnotize you, this album is yours to love. “Locust Valley” is out now.
