When I got to listen to RHCP’s latest, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.
The album begins self-ironically melancholicly, calmly and actually cunningly, though utilizing partially quite familiar tricks.
Somehow these first songs sounds more like a flirty goodbye than RHCP’s familiarly fierce ‘here we come and you can’t but to like us’ -type, the beginning of the album leaves me into awaiting for those irascible guitar solos and stuff, that is kinda promised to be coming.
The single tracks are starting to be a bit faster but maybe something straightforward to my taste, probaby intentionally simple?
After that, the album bows to pretty classic rock ballads, maybe a bit sappily too. There starts to be more to grab on and rougher souds, but it feels like being on a ride that accelerates and slows down again and again, I can’t say I’m impressed. The song structures are perhaps too “easy” for someone who has listened to their earlier material.
And I’m still not entirely convinced that I’m listening to rock music, I’m longing for the energy familiar from especially the breakthrough albums, however the direction could already be heard on previous “I’m with You” -album. For pop-rock, it’s good but fans of the songs like “Californication,” “Otherside,” “By the Way” and “Can’t Stop” could be disappointed.
On some songs, you can hear quite intresting structures and despite being able to hear faster rock, it doesn’t grasp on the listener and shake them up. Rather pets lightly.
Pros: Unique solutions in song structures and brave experimental line.
Cons: Somekind of light, maybe too relaxed style.
