Behexen – The Poisonous Path

When we are talking about Finnish black metal, Behexen is one of the bands that come to mind. The pioneers of the Finnish BM have been active since 1994 and they have been delivering us some dark and brutal BM ever since. They have released 7 albums so far and the 7th full-length record “The Poisonous Path” has been out recently.

From the first song that carries the same title as the album, the band delivers a raw, harsh but at times ‘melodic’ sound. The e-guitar riffs are dark and will capture the listener from the first listen. This is definitely the classic Behexen sound that we know although I am sure that there will be mixed opinions about whether this is the best album of the band or not. Nevertheless, this is the black metal that most of us would want to hear; brutal, dark to the bone and the type that carries a solid concept and does not ‘confuse’ the listener – conceptwise or soundwise-.

Considering the classic black metal sound, the elements such as drums, e-guitars and the brutal vocals create a sinister harmony throughout the record. These elements are blended so perfectly that the listener has the chance to admire each and every element of the dark Behexen sound. The tempo of the record is fast in general leaving no moment to pause or breathe. What I liked the most was how the band created that raw (vocals) but also melodic/dark (guitars) sound. No wonder why they achieved a good reputation in the genre; they definitely know how to deliver this solid sound. There is no atmosphere, no ‘melodies’ but just the fast, blasting, brutal sound that the classic BM fans will enjoy. I personally could not choose a favorite song as I found all of the songs in the album really impressive and I had the feeling that I was listening to a concept album… so I leave it up to the listener to figure out their favorite songs

“The Poisonous Path” will satisfy the fans of the band as well as the lovers of the raw BM in general. Especially for those of you who are interested in satanism, black magic or esoteric elements, reading the lyrics to understand and get into the record deeper will draw you in it even more! This might not be the best record of the band but it is definitely worth listening to and worth devouring!
