Wolfheart – Tyhjyys

When it comes to ‘winter metal’, there is no other like Wolfheart. Founded in 2013 by Tuomas Saukkonen, the band has been going strong with full-length albums and countless live shows. After having released “Shadow World” in 2015, they are back with a brand new record called “Tyhjyys” which means ’emptiness’.

With “Thyjyys”, Wolfheart shows us how progressive and dark they can take their sound. This is quite obvious from the first spin and even from the first song, which serves as an intro. Upon hearing the ‘acoustic’ beginning, I imagined myself in the middle of a snowy landscape where it’s dark and brutal.. just like the album cover and the album title. This darkness and emptiness will accompany the listeners throughout the record so those of you are familiar with Wolfheart’s sound will be amazed at the evolution of their style from the first spin. I also have to add that the previous records have always reminded me of bright winter days where it has just snowed and fresh snowflakes lay on the ground. This album, however, is pure ‘brutal black winter day’ where it’s snowing and it’s pitch black; the darkness and the void will be felt from the music so this album is definitely the darkest and the most atmospheric one.

After a few more spins, I found the album even more interesting and diverse. Apart from the typical Wolfheart sound that we know, there are even symphonic/gothic elements (“World on Fire”) or influences from doom (“The Flood” and “Tyhjyys”) and black metal (“The Rift”). These elements do not appear distinctively in each song or certain songs but they are blended quite well throughout the record, making the album diverse but also smooth to listen to. This also makes it hard to choose a favorite song as each song carries a highlight within but my personal favorites are “The Shores of the Lake Simple”, “World on Fire” and “Call of Winter”.

Wolfheart definitely redefined the ‘winter metal’ genre with “Tyhjyys”. Feel the cold breeze, the harsh winter atmosphere with this record and get ready to be blown away!
