2015 has been the year of gigs for the folk metal band Finntroll! It has been also quite special for them since they have played in Turkey for the very first time as the support act for the Dutch symphonic metal band Epica. What was even more interesting is that the band has played in the 3 big cities (Istanbul, İzmir and Ankara) which rarely happens when metal bands tour in Turkey!

As a huge Finntroll fan, this was my 4th time seeing the band live but somehow, I did not know what kind of audience there was gonna be; all in all, the headliners were Epica and this made me wonder how passionate the audience was for Finntroll…

Right before the band went on stage, I could see that the venue was full which was an awesome thing! The band started their show with ‘Blodsvept’ from their latest record ‘Blodsvept’ (2013) and from that moment, I could see that the audience in Ankara was dedicated indeed! Throughout the show, the audience applauded, (tried to) sing along and did not lose that energy and the craziness even one bit. This made the band even happier and more motivated; vocalist Vreth kept on laughing and smiling after songs – he did not even need to motivate the audience!- and the guitarists Skrymer and Routa were full of joy. There was also lots of interaction between the band and the audience. Vreth thanked the audience for their dedication despite Sunday – “Today is Sunday, right?- and there were even moments where he danced with Routa or Tundra on stage. So it was clear that the band as well as the audience had a great time! One thing that was missing was probably the mosh pit; Vreth tried to keep the mosh pit going but somehow the audience was more into shouting and the ‘devil horns’ rather than starting a mosh pit.

Considering that it was Finntroll’s first time in Ankara, the band has prepared an awesome set list (as always). There were songs from ‘Blodsvept’, ‘Nifelvind’ and ‘Nattfödd’ albums as well as some classics like ‘Svartberg’, ‘Nedgang’ and everyone’s favorite ‘Trollhammeren’. I can say that the audience went crazy especially during ‘Trollhammeren’, ‘Under Bergets Rot’ and ‘Jaktens Tid’ so these were the highlights of the performance!

At the end of the show, the trolls left us with pain in our necks and in total sweat but everyone was happy. We – the Finntroll fans- have been waiting for this moment for a very long time and I am glad that the band had such a great time in Turkey!
