15-06-2015 Liturgy

Supports: Circuit des Yeux; Venue: OCCII, Amsterdam (Netherlands)
By: Sabine van Gameren

They are far from home, the American formation Liturgy, but this evening a show in Amsterdam was planned and the guys managed to fill up a venue on a Monday evening.

As a support they had Circuit des Yeux along. A solo act by Haley Fohr. About month ago the album “In Plain Speech” came out so there was plenty material to play. A soft and cute voice came out of her when she talks to the audience, but while singing you get a whole different side to hear. It’s an emotional and dark encounter that may wonder many, how does she do it? Well, it is a different kind of thing so to say. Her strength is in the ease she has while entertaining the audience. Most people watch in in awe. Then, with her guitar and voice she manages to give a quite rich sound to the listener. It looks minimalistic, but don’t get yourself fooled with that. She manages to put out a good support and while her set finishes the majority seemed into it.

LiturgyLiturgy was back in Amsterdam. We saw them about four years before while the audience took a sit down and watched it intensely, this time there were a whole lot more people yet watching it just as intensely. The band makes transcendental Black Metal and they attract a whole variety of people. Some metal fans, but a lot of random people that have one thing in common and that is their curiosity for this intense music.
Liturgy releases “The Ark Work” this year which is their third full length album. The guys start their set quite calmly and bring in the energy quite fast. What makes the band interesting to watch are the way the guitars are putting out their sound in relation to the whole. Most people are putting a lot of attention and observe this specifically, but the guys have a very energetic drummer on board as well.

The vocals take people by the hand and make the story a bit more clear for those who get lost in the game, though tonight maybe not the strongest part. Throughout the set the involvement of them grow and at the end the audience received over an hour of intensity. A sound that serves the diverse crowd well and leaves them lingering for more. With the promise standing the guys are back in October they leave the stage and it seems clear that they succeeded in spreading their form of Black Metal a bit further.
