James Labrie is probably most known for his work with Dream Theatre. However, he has released a bunch of solo albums as well, “Impermanent Resonance” being his fifth and latest album which got released recently.
Even though we quite know what we can expect from James Labrie, he guarantees you with some surprises in each release. “Impermanent Resonance” has for example some keys in there which come close to what you would hear in some Industrial Metal release. Maybe not the first thing I would have expected, but that makes the release more exciting right away. Furthermore the album is filled with strong guitarriffs that can spice up a song very well and brought in the stereotypical way James can do it, vocals with a catchy edge. A song like “Undertow” is one that you only need to hear once and then you know it by heart. Yet, it is not having the most standard song structure. Also remarkable is the ballad “Say You’re Still Mine” which is brought with a lot of feeling. That will surely do well in a live set!
Overall you can say that James Labrie has succeeded in releasing an album that still can surprise people even after having many albums on his name already. It is catchy but never loses touch with what you know James for. A stunning release that promises much good for the upcoming Dream Theatre.
