Lacuna Coil is one of those bands that have been around for quite a while, the band started with their in 2001 released “Unleashed Memories” since then it has always been trying to find their own style. When “Comalies” was released they gain success with a broader audience.
“Shallow life” is the eagerly awaited new album from the Italian metal band Lacuna Coil, to follow up their 2006 release “Karmacode”. After exploring different territories while maintaining their own style Lacuna Coil hopes to have grown while creating a powerful yet beautiful album. To get this done, Lacuna Coil have worked with acclaimed producer Don Gilmore (Linking Park & Pearl Jam).
The best track on the album is “The Maze” it reminds me of their album “Comalies”, the intro gets you back to their sound on that album. Andrea Ferro (male vocals) starts singing more rough on the track “The Maze” with some effect over it, but that sounds very good. The track is very catchy but does not get too sweet. The only problem I have a little with this album is that the lyrics are quite about easy topics, I might expected a little deeper meaning, but at least everyone can relate to it in this way. Cristina Scabbia (female vocals) states: “It represents the way we see ourselves in the days we live in through truth, love and lies.” One of that catchy, easy to relate tracks is “I like it”, which is about living your live the way you like it and moving on. Lacuna Coil has made a video for their single “Spellbound”, another track with a catchy chorus. The first track of the album has a very nice intro, a bit weird and a very good energy and Andrea who seem to sing better on each album.
General conclusion is that the album is very catchy but maybe also a little too mainstream. A track like “I like it” flirts with pop music. The band started out as an gothic metal band but now I would say they released a steady rock album.
