The Swedish Shining released a small EP. It contains four covers and is meant to keep their fans satisfied while the band is working on a new full length release.
Must be said, the band made some interesting choices when it comes to these covers. Poets of the Fall’s “Carnival of Rust” surprised mostly. The Finnish pop rock formation has a strong name and a singer with a very charismatic voice, so covering this is quite a challenge. Shining did better than I expected, yet to put it across the original they simply have not brought in the same passion. It appears to be a bit darker in this edition, which actually suits the song as well. Interesting choice it is.
Katatonia’s “For My Demons” is one that seemed less surprising, It is done well, but you keep on hearing Katatonia in it. The covers of Kent and Imperiet are both like that as well, It has a little Shining touch but you can’t set it too far apart from the original.
For the fans it is a pleasant album and it shows a more pop side of this formation as well. One for the collectors and those who enjoy a dark doom pop release. Don’t expect the typical Shining sound in it.
