Horn of The Rhino – Grengus

Releasedate: feb 2012; Label: Doomentia Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

The band Horn of The Rhino was previously known as just Rhino, but changed that due to legal issues. “Grengus” is the band’s second release under this name.

The makes music with a think, sludge sound mixed with Thrash and Death here and there. They remain in the slower tempo’s for most of the album and are there to slowly built up the tension towards climaxes. What you get to know after a few songs is that the band takes their time for it. It seem to go on and on and slowly built into something. A bit of a grunge attitude can be found here, listen to the vocals and you quickly get there. Unfortunately they sometimes get a bit overshadowed by the instruments, which is a pity. It is obvious that this music will not attract the average metal crowd. It may be more for those who are into Sludge and Post Metal or maybe some fans of Doom will fall into this as well, but it is not an album that listens easily. Compared to the release “Weight of Coronation” the band made some progress in their sound, this album sounds like they took it more to the basics of what their ideas where, not too much around and that has its charm.
