Shining – Live Blackjazz

Releasedate: 11-11-2011; Label: Indie Recordings
By: Sabine van Gameren

Shining started out as a jazz band in 1998 but evolved during the years to progressive metal. Blend it all with Black Metal and you have exactly what Shining is right now. Their self-defined genre ‘Blackjazz’ grew fast all over the world when the album carrying that name too got released. About almost two years later the band releases a live album and DVD. “Live Blackjazz” is out now.

Have you heard the band’s reputation, but never manage to see them live yourself? Or have you been an addicted fan of their gigs and can you not wait for the next time the guys hit the road, then here is the solution: “Live Blackjazz”. The band releases a live album in combination with a DVD recorded at Rockefeller music hall in Oslo (Norway). The DVD may be a bit though to look at , if you don’t know what to expect. Strobo’s are used a lot and that gives it a dramatical effect. A big pro on this DVD is that the shots all stay long enough for you to actually see what is going on, if these would have been shorter it would not have worked. Every musician gets its attention and you can clearly see the unique style of them all. Especially if the set gets further, because then the hysteria tones down a little bit.
“Live Blackjazz” is a perfect example of how a live recording can actually add something extra to the experience of listening to a band. Shining is a formation that works best live, so this release is to be recommended.
