Metsatöll – Ulg

Releasedate: 11-11-2011; Label: Spinefarm
By: Sabine van Gameren

Metsatöll is a band from Estland. They formed in 1999 and make Folk Metal since. “Ulg” is the sixth full length release of this band and is out now.

The album starts with splitting you in two thoughts. The first sends you straight to something you recognize, the sound, the instruments, it is a typical Folk metal album as you may expect it but the second thought brings you to the point that the band tried to make this album come to you as an unique experience. Composition wise this means they sometimes step away from the expected to do a little de-tour. The band comes quite raw, the production of the album is not making it too shiny and that suits quite well with the sound, bringing back that folk atmosphere even more. Those who have heard the band’s previous release “Äio” may recognize a lot of that sound in “Ulg”. It is safe to say that whenever you liked that album this release will be of your likes as well. But the band is not completely giving you the same. It are the little details in this release that keep the album interesting and show that Metsatöll has plenty of inspiration to keep entertaining their fans.
