Emmett Tinley is the frontman of the folk/indie band The Prayer Boat, which hasn’t done anything for some time now. The album we have here is the last one of Emmett’s solo career. His first CD was released in 2005 under the name “Attic Faith”. His second one is simply called after himself “Emmett Tinley”.
Born in the United States, Emmett has travelled a lot in his life and you can feel it in his songs. They take you on the road, though it’s basically a journey to your soul. The tempo is slow, there are no fioritura. A few simple notes will carry you away in reveries. The themes are about love, pain, choices in life and home. You can feel a constant solitude as if this album was an ode to depression.
Above all, Emmett Tinley bases his music on the purity and the power of his voice. The falsettos are perfectly mastered and sound beautiful. Now, his voice is extremely clear and goes high. So high that it can hurt your ears at times. Do not turn the volume too loud. For accompaniment, we have different instruments for quite each song. It’s refreshing and changes the atmosphere. The acoustic guitar and cello of the first song, Takes A Long Time To Heal, will take you on deserted lands, when the percussions of Wherever You Are sounds deliciously retro. On the other side, the saxo on Sooner Or Later and the piano on Same Bright Heaven drown you in the dim light of a city bar.
Emmett Tinley is an interesting album that deserves the attention of every daydreamer.
