Seether is a post-grunge/alternative metal band from Pretoria, South Africa, formed in 1999. The band is currently signed to Wind-up Records. Originally named Saron Gas and signed to Musketeer Records in South Africa, they changed their name in 2002, coinciding with the release of their second album and major label debut, Disclaimer. They toured quite extensively through the years and the band is now up for their fifth release “Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray” which came about four years after their latest release.
Seether is known for making rock song with a commercial edge but with this album they took that back a little. Still there is a lot of catchiness but maybe not that obvious as the band have done before. Vocalist Shaun Morgan has found its strongest points in his vocals, which he takes in his advantage in every song and that leaves us with twelve tracks and four more for those who bought the deluxe album. At first you might think that this album does not really have a song standing out, one you expect to be a single but after a couple of times you start to realize that the album is full of it. To mention a few highlights, there is the album opener “Fur Cue” which immediately sticks in the head. Guaranteed, if you hear it a couple of times on the radio you just can’t get it out of your head anymore. Then there is “Country Song” of which a video is made as well. Those who think twelve songs is not enough, after four years of waiting the deluxe edition is the solution. Maybe it is better to say that no one should bother to take the normal edition, because after it you want more anyway and those four bonus tracks supplied are just as great as the rest. Definitely an great come back from the guys.
