The Austrian Melodic Death Metal formation Devastating Enemy has been formed in 2006. They released an EP before, but “The Fallen Prophet” is the band’s debut full length.
The band may mention that Melodic in their description, but the Death is clearly taken the overhand in this release. It’s a bit chaotic, the vocal use is diverse but maybe not really the most standing out in any way. It could have gone deeper and the clean vocals maybe more upfront instead of pushed away to the back. That would have brought a larger contrast. More pleasing are the guitars. The riffage seems quite solid and are the main attraction in the band. Drums gets hidden too much in the mix as well, kind of a waste because that could have given it some extra aggression. Maybe a bit different mixing would have done good for this album, but it must be said it is the band’s debut. With some development there could be great things coming from the guys, the skills are there. The songwriting seems to be done well, maybe in the whole track list a bit more excitement could do as the songs tend to be too much in line with each other, but that is just a matter of daring to experiment. The album is nice for some random listening, perhaps to remind you to see what they are doing in about 2 years.
