Releasedate: 05-03-2012; Label: Cooperative Music
By: Lara Cappelli
Coming from Oxford, Jonquil is an indie pop band. After recording their first album in their bedrooms and their second in a deserted house, “Point of Go” is their third album, which happens to be their first registered in a proper studio.
Jonquil have nothing to hide. With this release they turn loose a sort of positivism in the way the songs are composed, that naturally reverses into a sort of peaceful atmosphere. You can easily perceive it from the first songs already, but here’s what makes the difference in this circle: Jonquil don’t only try to create a light setting, they drag you into it. Whether you want it or not, you won’t help feeling it and eventually find your feet keeping up with the pace. “Point of Go” doesn’t come as an ambitious album: the songs are not that articulated and comfortably float on the overall atmosphere already mentioned. Nevertheless, Jonquil have definitely learnt the meaning of simplicity as a highly positive quality, especially when combined with pleasantness and smoothness, to give birth, in this case, to a pop album that simply works very well.
Imagine this album to be the soundtrack of a Sunday afternoon. It might remind you that there’s nothing wrong about lazing around with a drink in your hands once in a while, just sit in your balcony and enjoy the sunshine. After all you have a good excuse to do so; summer is coming, isn’t it?
