07-09-2008 Mustasch

Supports: Supercharger; Venue: Tivoli de Helling, Utrecht (Netherlands)

Tivoli De Helling in The Netherlands was hosting two scandinavian metal bands on this Sunday. One comes from Denmark, the other came from Sweden. It was a quiet evening. Maybe 40/50 people in total, but that might not be surprising after all the many free metal festivals happening lately and this gig being on a Sunday.

The first band, Supercharger was the Danish band. They released one EP “Junkyard Spectacles” and doing shows since 2006. With influences of several 80’s metal bands they create their own powerful sound. The band shows quite some action on stage. The members are basically everywhere and have a great interaction with the audience. They teach us the Danish word for “cheers” and we all had to remember it because we would hear it quite often during the evening. This explosion of energy started the evening well, but it took a while before the audience was responding. I would say: a nice surprise.

Mustasch is a band from Göteborg, Sweden. The make classic rock with stoner rock touches. They brought quite some releases to the world already, starting in 2001. One of the first things vocalist Ralf Gyllenhammar did when he entered the stage was begging for beer at the audience. Not that he didn’t have any, right behind him. He got some and they start playing. The band seems to have a certain attitude with them. In Sweden they are way more popular but in the start they were certainly not so pleased with the fact that only 40/50 people were there for them. They looked around quite arrogant and just played. Nothing more than playing and begging for beer. Later on, they seem to enjoy them selves a bit more and actually smiled. Although they were supposed to play 90 minutes, after a little more than one hour they quit. They jumped of the stage and walked to the bar to get some, certainly annoyed that no one was sponsoring them anymore. After that they played an encore, mostly because no one was planning to leave already. You can wonder if certain attitude is a good idea while being in a country where you don’t have too much fans yet. Somehow it fits in the way their music is made. They feel like rock stars and the act like rock stars. Also, the quality of their music is good enough. I enjoyed their music, but I disliked the fact that they behave like they’re rock stars. As if it comes to that I can only say: they live like rock stars but they are not rock legends yet.
