German musician Michael Frenkel has a project called Aspectee. He started this project in 2009 and released his debut album “Morben” before. Now he is back with a new release: “Jour Cinq”.
A French title by a German artist, “Jour Cinq” (day five) is an ambient electronic story that asks your imagination to fill it in. Drones giving you are dark and sinister palette. the rest is blank, Aspectee gives you something to hold on but leaves it up to you to make something out of it. It doesn’t necessarily gives you a strong direction, you must live into it to. The atmosphere is cool and deep, not too much ups and downs in that, it doesn’t have extreme contrasts but rather work towards a change with a well-chosen care. Question starts to come in, can you make something out of it? It is certainly an album that is somehow accessible, it flows well and you don’t get the feeling you have to be very intense listening or quite some repeats to do process it but the feeling you have when you get out of it is not as overwhelming as some drone albums could do. It is certainly one that you will listen to some times though. Pleasant but not life changing to say it in a clear way.
