Psychostars – Making Friends With Monsters

Releasedate: 21-12-2011; Label: Violent Journey
By: Sabine van Gameren

Scandinavian horror action rock, that’s what they describe themselves and the cover of their debut album “Making Friends With Monsters” sets you right into that direction as well.

The band made their entry at Tempelores already in 2007 when we saw them playing at a charity event and did a short interview as well. Now some years later their very first album is scheduled to be released. And while the first songs are playing you can only recall that the band is bringing the same vibes on the album as they had with the live performance that stuck in mind. A lot of energy and lots of passion comes out of the horror rockers. Quickly you may conclude that the album is a party album, there for entertainment.
Psychostars is female fronted, the vocals may be something you have to get used to, the whole album is one that needs to grow on you. The raw rock edge gives these vocals that little extra that makes it stand out. Instrumentally, the band fill their sound with their guitars full of melodics to lead you back into it at those moments you feel a song starts to get out of line with the rest. Drums are also on a quite decent place in the mix, forming a good mix with bass to add some backbone to it.
The song “Vampire Brides” sticks out for it’s catchiness, would do nice as a single as it is a song that people would remember most from hearing it live or recorded. “Making Friends With Monsters” is an album that is full of energy and yet it may not be love at first sight if you have not heard the band before. Yet it is one worth to hold on to as when the songs are played for a second time you might already be in at a point of no return.
