29-09-2011 Kitty, Daisy and Lewis

Supports: Gemma Ray; Venue: Centralstation, Darmstad (Germany)
By: Nina Mende

Tuesday night out in Darmstadt brought out quite some 60s fans. The reason? Kitty, Daisy and Lewis. Kitty, Daisy and Lewis is a three-piece band comprising the siblings of the Durham family. Their music is influenced heavily by R&B, swing, jump blues, country and Western, blues, Hawaiian and rock ‘n’ roll. They are all multi-instrumentalists playing guitar, piano, banjo, lapsteel guitar, harmonica, double bass, ukulele, drums, trombone, xylophone and accordion between them. Kitty, Daisy and Lewis have been performing from a young age, and have therefore built up a fanbase, which Amy Winehouse, Chris Martin, Eagles Of Death Metal, Dustin Hoffman and Ewan McGregor are supposedly part of. They have had worldwide success with sold out tours and have opened for Coldplay, Razorlight, Richard Hawley, Jools Holland among others.

But before they came up, Gemma Ray warmed up the audience. Gemma Ray is a singer / songwriter from the UK. A series of releases is kick-started by the 4-track EP “Runaway” on 10″ and digital download, released by Bronze Rat Records on September 12th. This “gap-closer” features 2 teaser songs from her forthcoming new album, but also features 2 exclusives, including “Lights Out Zoltar!” – the missing jigsaw piece which was mysteriously omitted from the 2009 album of the same name. With s glittery shirt and a butcher knife in her guitar, Gemma Ray sang and played guitar almost angel like. For about thirty minutes she and her two band mates entertained the audience with her music, and they liked it a lot.

Now it was time for Kitty, Daisy and Lewis to rock the venue. The cheering was immense as the band entered the venue. The three siblings as well as their father on guitar and mother on bass, they played their music and got the audience dancing along. The fans in the audience room were stunned by the performance. For a couple songs a saxophone player joined the family on stage. Kitty, Daisy and Lewis played old and new songs of their own as well as some covers. People could sing along, danced and clapped along, cheering and whistling out loud after each songs. Kitty, Daisy and Lewis came back for two encores. Their set lasted for two full hours. What an amazing Tuesday night out with such a brilliant band.
