Defeater is a US band recognized not only for their obvious musical talent, but also for their social awareness and environmental activism in a musical landscape plagued with insincerity and complacency. The Massachusetts-based band formed two years ago with the premise of utilizing a musical platform for good; whether it be starting an environmentally conscious company or writing albums about oppression and equal rights. With one full-length release under their belt (2008’s Travels) and an EP (Lost Ground), Defeater is once again releasing a musically precise and genre-bending album that will redefine the term “forward thinking music”.
Now Defeater has a new album out called “Empty Days & Sleepless Nights”. Fourteen tracks gathered together on one release. The lyrics in each song are somewhere in between being sung and being shouted. The music is fast and catchy in the melodies. Closer to the end of the album there is a major twist: The songs are turning into acoustic songs with cleanly sung vocals. Simply amazing and beautiful! The music itself as well as the lyrics are quite serious and somehow tragic sounding. Almost depressing you feel compassionate for the singer. “White Oak Doors” is a very slow and melancholic song. “Empty Days & Sleepless Nights” is an amazing album, refreshing and challenging. Go get it now!
