Weh is formed in 2002 by Erik E planning to make it an acoustic project. The Norwegian created a double-release which contains all songs from previously made Demo’s and a couple of new recordings. “Origins” is out now.
A dark singer/songwriter, that’s what you though. Especially since the voice of Erik reminded me to Sivert Høyem, also from Norway. So Erik and his guitar can create quite an interesting journey. The first EP, “The Death”, knows some moments of experimenting. Sometimes using the vocals as a growl in singer/songwriter style, which gives it that extra push towards the darker side. The further you get in this track list, the more you hear an advance from an almost teenage way of putting the lyrics out about the big evil dark world, to a more mature way. The atmosphere gets better when the child is out of the song’s soul.
At the second disc the band meets another transformation. In general the songs seem to lose a bit on speed, but whatever remained throughout this whole release is the dark side, stating that Erik E has, indeed, a metal background. At the end we run into the newest recordings. Some in Norwegian, giving homage to the folk side that is there too.
“Origins” is an interesting journey through time with Erik as your tourguide. Plenty to listen to, two hours of your day are filled but since his voice is very comfortable, with the winter season in the head, this release will probably take way more playing hours than you could have foreseen.
