P-A-U-L – Gunshot Lullaby

Releasedate: 01-09-2010; Label: E&E Entertainment / Bertus
By: Sabine van Gameren

Paul Andrew Ulysses Lamb, is the name behind this bluesrock act. Coming from Detroit, USA, the aim is now to release “Gunshot Lullaby” in Benelux.

P-A-U-L had the first surprise for the listener in the very start of the album presented right away: female vocals. Might be a no case to some but when reading the whole bio it was not the most expected move to bring these ladies in the background. His own vocals have quite a touch of soul as well, so this is a good match. A good grip back in history brings you to names as Deep Purple and Jimi Hendrix and these influences seem obvious in these songs.
Overall the raw feeling of everyday’s misery and hope come together very well.
After a couple of songs, though, there is a slight need for more variation in the music as the songs are a bit alike in what they radiate. One of the highlights on this album must be “Detroit Is On Fire” which has a slightly different template and starts off catchy and more up-tempo. Also the closer of this album “Behind The Brothel” is worth to mention for being very groovy, though it is not the typical song to close an album with.
Overall it is a nice blues rock album, perfect for Sunday afternoons. Don’t expect it to be that killer record you play over and over again though.
