This weekend Hanau/Germany was a good place to be if you like electro music and rock. Three bands played there on both days, Saturday and Sunday, in the sold out amphitheater: FAQ, Down Below and Unheilig.

Because of the quite big amount of families with younger children in the audience and the people living nearby the show began quite early and ended early as well. As at every Unheilig show, the audience was very mixed: from little kids to elderly people, you could find every age group at the shows. Also to be found at every show is the separated kids/family area. The location itself was very beautiful, right next to the palace garden of Hanau. And the sound of the amphitheater was great as well.
FAQ from Switzerland entered the stage first. Many of the Unheilig fans new FAQ already because of the previous shows together. So the cheering was loud as the Swiss band entered the stage. They played many songs of their current Jack The Ripper related album “Whitechapel” but also off the previous album “Is Pornography Art”. The band put up a great performance, talked a lot to their audience and got them going along very well. The audience even sang and clapped along. Throughout the end of the show, the singer, Phil, handed out some CDs. FAQ covered Placebo’s “Every You Every Me” as well as an Apoptygma Berzerk song. The performance of FAQ was very energetic and you just had to move along to the music. All four musicians were totally in their element when playing and you could feel their passion for music. FAQ played for about 40 minutes.

Up next was Down Below. Down Below is a band from East Germany founded in 2003. Their songs are all in German and their fan base has grown throughout the years. They also contributed a song to this year’s world cup. Many girls in the audience enjoyed their show. The singer moved around on stage quite a lot, singing to his fans. Several fans could sing along. Their performance lasted for about 50 minutes.

Last of the night was Unheilig. As the ship was set up on stage and the candles were lit, the 50s music began playing, reminding a little bit of Titanic, only that this ship here was not doomed to sink. After a few 50s song, some “Reeperbahn” songs were played before you could hear the ship horn right before Unheilig entered the stage. Full speed ahead seemed the motto. Everybody sang and danced along, clapped and had a good time. Unheilig mostly played songs off the latest album but also some older ones. After a few fast songs, the show slowed down and Unheilig played their slow and deep songs. The “Graf” talked to his fans and asked them to go along, whether it was clapping or taking out their lighters to create a starry sky amongst the audience. For Unheilig the amphitheater was the perfect location. The show lasted for about 90 minutes including several encores.

Both days the bands played the same sets, the audience of the first day was more the hardcore Unheilig, FAQ and Down Below fans whereas Sunday seemed to be more of a family day. It was a wonderful weekend with some great bands. Unheilig and friends was definitely worth the way to Hanau.
