04-08-2010 Papa Roach

Supports: Jettblack, Life of Agony; Venue: 013, Tilburg (Netherlands)
By: Elvira Visser

Papa Roach is touring Europe with different support acts. What can lead up to a very weird line up. Like tonight Ill Niño could not make it but even then would been so different than Papa Roach. What to think about Life of Agony. Different music, different type of fans. Which will lead to an interesting evening at 013 in Tilburg. The first band starts early but when I arrive (straight for work) there is no long cue and I can find a nice spot. During the first songs of Jettblack the people keep coming in and before the end of the show, I think almost all people were there.

This gig would be a little different then when some had bought their tickets. The singer from Ill Niño had some troubles with his back and would not be in good shape to perform this evening with his band. Replacement was found in the English band Jettblack. That is the beauty of these last arrangements, you will see some bands on stage you had never heard about. Well at least I had never heard about Jitterblack. The band comes from England has was founded about three years ago. The style of the band is nice 80s and 90s rock ‘n’ roll with a rough edge. Hard task for them to a) replace a band with a totally different style and b) to get the crowd entertained and ready. There was some negativity and a feeling of boredom coming from the crowd. Mainly the sixteen year old girls who where there to see Papa Roach. Sometimes you should open yourself to other music, because Jettblack was a fucking good band. Maybe not everyone’s style but they played tight. They bring you great riffs and hooks with a good doses of chatchiness while the two leadsingers top it off. Great performance while they had little place on stage in front of the gear or the other two bands, they still moved around and interacted with the audience.

What I kind of feared was about to happen. The younger people in the audience pulled boring faces after the first couple of songs from Life of Agony. It was not only me who noticed, Keith made a comment to the audience about them being around for a long time rocking the stage….like already 20 years, while most people of the audience were not even born. Sending kind of a message: fuck you if you are young and you do not like us…we have been here for a long time and there are people so do like us. This with cheering from the Life of Agony fans who came to see this band. The weird tension stayed but the band just played and gave their all. I had only seen Keith Caputo with his acoustic band but he showed he is a show man who knows how to rock. The poses he was taking every now and then, the leaning on the microphone stand. It was all there, the band played a great gig. The sound was also perfect! Life of Agony came to exist in the 90s, in Brooklyn – New York. And you can notice that they have been around, the ease they perform with. There was always something unique and interesting about this band that has kept fans around over the year and they showed this on stage. It is something in the atmosphere or something they bring out to the audience. When singing some known songs like “Lost at 22” which they played as one of their first song, you heard enough people singing along. Great performance!

Finally for the girls who stand first row it was time for Papa Roach after the band had taken the time for a change over. Making sure everything was ready. The band from Sacramento has also been around for a couple of years. It all started after their big his “Last Resort”. Over the years the sound of the band has changed. The anger and energy from the beginning years has faded a little and they now produce more pop-rock sound with a nice bass line. Lucky for the older fans they played a mix between old and new tracks, and even their newest single. The front man Jacoby Shaddix makes sure they fans who have been waiting for them are entertained. He will make them sing along, do a wall of death and jump up and down. Shouds he dislikes Justin Bieber in between songs and his dislike for the Hollywood girls. Jocoby also does not know how to stand still, from the first seconds he enters the stage he has been moving. Amazingly he keeps this up to the last tones from “Last Resort”. The band plays nice and with the newer songs he shows he is a good singer. Personally I liked to older ones better. They seem to have more groove and the bass sound is more present as it seems. A nice, entertaining and energetic gig from the Papa Roach guys.

The evening was a little weird, and to say witch band was the best… They all brought their own thing. I guess if you like a certain style you would like one more then the other. Jettblack made a good impression seeing them first time. Life of Agony was brilliant in their own way, they really had a different atmosphere around. Papa Roach was musically less to me then the others but their show, enthusiasm and energy is maybe what you are looking for as a Papa Roach fan.
