Jess By The Lake is the solo project of the multi-talented Jasmin Saarela, whom some of you know as the amazing frontwoman from Jess and the Ancient Ones. The project posted some teasers here and there of a debut album and so here comes “Under The Red Light Shine”.
“Under The Red Light Shine” offers us an organic and melodic approach to Jess’ world. Inspired by various themes such as the nature and spiritual concepts as well as the 60s psych spirit, the album is colorful and full of emotions. The big highlight that is Jess’ eclectic vocals is completed perfectly with the backing vocals, keyboards and the riffs. Another big highlight is also this hidden melancholy that is felt in certain songs such as “Halo (Ghosts In The Flame)”, “Legacy Crown”. These elements all form a perfect musical feast for the listener to enjoy and make this release a powerful and magical one.
In general, the album has a smooth flow to it even though this might be slow and ‘calm’ at times. So don’t expect a mad ride but take the musical journey as it is and relax with it. There will definitely be a few songs that stand out more such as “Under The Red Light Shine”, “Legacy Crown” or the last track “Interstellar”… especially the ‘space’ theme at the end is rather the twist and turn of UTRLS, leaving an open-end for the listener.
Smooth, calm, magical and personal… “Under The Red Light Shine” has turned out to be quite different from what I expected but it sure as hell did not disappoint. JATAO fans as well as occult/psych and rock fans in general, get it and add it to your collection.
