The Phantom of Phobos is a Finnish atmospheric sci-fi-metal group founded in 2015. The band publishes their debut album “From a Dead Channel” via Concorde Music Company this month.
The bandmembers use pseudonyms I, II, XX and XIX. Musically they seem to draw froma wide range of influences. One one side you feel that psychedelic touch to it, but a modern melodic touch lifts up to a very 2019 sound. On the other hand it has a bit of Courtney Love into it, something one can’t connect right away but grows onto you while listening.
Then before you know it you are listening to “Halloween” it has an electric touch, something dreamy, a track that drives you into it deeply. It’s intensity grows but teases with an abrupt ending.
Some darker songs follow. “The Uninvited” is probably the saddest of them all. It is slow, and melancholic, a bit doomy even.
Most impressive track of the release is also closing it. “Dreaming of Dying” is straightforward, the lyrics may not leave one question of its abouts. Leaves you with some food for thoughts when ending your listening turn.
The Phantom of Phobos are off with a great start, an album that has a unique face, a sound that defines the band in its diversity and easily captivates you many spins. Put some money on it we’ll see this release return at the end of 2019 in our yearlist.
