A Pale Horse Named Death from Brooklyn, New York City is back with their 3rd album after 6 years since their highly acclaimed “Lay My Soul To Rest” album. The Brooklyn lords of doom is basically the other one of the two flag-bearers of the legendary Type 0 Negative along with Kenny Hickey`s Seventh Void. I, for one, was very happy to hear that the band was going to release a new album when I first heard the news being a huge T0N fan. T0N`s first drummer Sal Abruscato does the vocals that grew on me in time and T0N´s second and long-term drummer Johnny Kelly plays the drums in APHND. If the band had managed to get K. Hickey on the guitars and Josh Silver on the keys, the line-up would have been complete, of course minus the one and only Pete Steele.
Before I get too emotional, let’s move on to the album itself. What can I really say about the album? I got too impressed to say anything negative, because there ain’t anything negative to say about it. However, I need to say that it grew on me in time after 3 spins to be exact. Then I fully got the grasp of the doom and gloom, appreciated the sludgy guitars and the quite dirty vocals of Abruscato which fits the whole concept and the atmosphere of the album. My absolute favorites end up to be “End Of Days”, “Fell In My Hole”, the eponymous track with the album; “WTWBU” and New Order’s Blue Monday reminiscent “Love The Ones You Love To Hate”. Somehow with “Love The Ones You Love To Hate” I was taken back to the vibe of New York CBGB days in the 80s. Honestly, “Fell In My Hole” sounds like a track off a lost T0N tape and I do not mean it in a cynical way bacause I absolutely love it!
One of my colleagues from the zine likened the APHND’s sound to Alice In Chains’s sludgy sound and I have to agree with that, this album is like the mixture of Type 0 Negative and AIC soundwise. I want to thank the band for giving me the sound I enjoy immensely.
