After two albums as a folk black doom band the Russian Kauan has turned to another page. The band comes from Russian Siberia, Chelyabinsk and was founded by Anton Belov and Alexander Borovich back in 2005. Over the years they have changes their sound into the direction of ambient post rock. The band worked with other people on their albums and live but none of them eventually fitted the bands conception. In 2006 Lubov Mushnikove joined the band as a violin player, shorty after Alexander Borovich left the band.
With “Avaa Tuulen Maa” they present their third album which is full of atmosphere. The band balances on the line of progressive rock and post rock. Kauan is great in creating melancholic atmospheres in their tracks, still a bit doomy mixed with piano, violin and a clean voice. What makes it not so light as a feather that whirl down are the guitar riffs. “Avaa Tuulen Maa” is Finnish for “the spacious land of wind”, Anton must have a love for the Finnish language as he himself is not Finnish. All the tracks are sung in Finnish.
This albums contains only 5 tracks but they are quite long with beautiful melancholic music. The wind literary takes you throughout the album as you can hear it in the into and it returns in the songs atmosphere. A very nice calm album that you should listen to when you have the time. It is all very dreamlike but very well recorded and the sound is great. Just sit down and listen, if you like atmospheric music it is a must.
