Batalion d’amour is Polish formation that started as a gothic formation in the 80’s. Through the years they changed towards a more symphonic version of themselves. In 2016 they released their sixth album called: “Fenix”. It took eleven years to get them to a new one, but it is out now.
At first the album seems a bit mellow and weird, deep dramatic vocals telling a story, a story you can’t really follow as it is in Polish though, you purely have to go with the emotions of the atmosphere and that is not always easy with these songs. A bit like Eurovision, without any visuals that could even clear it up. The songs are all quite mellow, they are not really picking up a more passionate or aggressive touch so knowing there are 77 minutes of listening it becomes a bit of a sitout. But besides not really being able to pick up what it is all about, you can hear some good vocals, there is more variance in there than we get to hear I think. A bit safe perhaps, I wish to hear a bit more risks being taken. The instrumental part is not jumping out extraordinary. It’s well-done but not something exceptional.
Altogether the release is an interesting one. For someone that doesn’t get the language it is not easy to get the full experience, but if you do it is probably an album that warms your heart.
