Tardy Brothers – Bloodline

Releasedate: 07-04-2009; Label: Candlelight Records
By: Sabine van Gameren

John and Donald Tardy are mostly known from Obituary, but now the brothers teamed up to release music under the name Tardy Brothers. The Cavalera Conspiracy of death metal? The first release under this name is “Bloodline”.

The idea of the Tardy Brothers is that they invite other musicians to join them on each album. For this album Ralph Santolla, John Li, Scott Johnsson and Jerry Tidwell were invited to play guitar. For many metal fans it will be hard not continuously compare the music to Obituary. Especially since it is not a big step away from what Obituary does. The typical vocals are there, the Obituary spirit is there. It is a bit sad that the guys did not take things into a really new direction. Never change a winning factor is often said, but I was surely convinced that I would be surprised with a completely new winning factor.
Even though the similarities are there, “Bloodline” is not an Obituary album, but a Tardy Brothers album. With inviting guitarists Ralph Santolla they brought a slight edge of melodic sounds into the riffs. Be aware that bringing in four guitarist on an album means that guitar solos are there and demand attention. If you like that, you surely feel pleased with “Bloodline” since there are loads of them. For me they brought the fun in the album. The guitars here are not a stable factor since there are four of them. It’s a surprise to hear the different approaches of the guitarist in combination with the stable factors here: the Tardy Brothers.

To buy or not to buy? Obituary fans: yes, buy it. It’s not too far away from what you are used to, but yet there is enough difference to see it as something different.
