30-03-2012 Barren Earth

Venue: Keikkamesta, Salo (Finland)
By: Lara Cappelli

Barren Earth is a Finnish progressive death metal band formed in 2007. The band boasts a rich line-up, with members who appeared, or still appear, on bands such as Swallow The Sun, Amorphis and Moonsorrow and Kreator. Their second full-length, “The Devil’s Resolve” was released last month and is taking the band around Finland for few shows; tonight they played in Salo.

It wasn’t maybe the luckiest of the nights for Barren Earth to play in Salo: Kotiteollisuus, a famous Finnish band, was playing nearby and it likely grabbed a bigger crowd compared to the one that gathered in Keikkamesta. As a matter of fact, the venue was not that crowded, but those who were standing in the front row were showing enough interest and involvement. The first half of the gig went by pretty smoothly, starting out with “Forlom Waves” followed by some of the songs of the latest album as well. The shoe started to pinch on the second half. To my eyes, the rest of the gig was slowly shadowed down by the excessive drunkenness of one of the members, which eventually got out of hand. I truly wish I could find something else to say about the concert itself, but I have to admit that the situation completely grabbed my attention in a way I couldn’t control. I actually spent most of the time thinking on how to interpret the situation, whether to let it fall under a bad night, an underestimated gig or a total lack of respect. Whatever the reason, I’m sure Barren Earth didn’t show off their best side tonight and, if I had to draw my conclusions out of this gig, they wouldn’t even be close to be positive. Nevertheless, besides the strong line-up, the band has on its side two remarkable releases, which is enough to leave this chapter open.
To be continued, hopefully on a sharper occasion.
