27-10-2011 The Spirit That Guides Us

Supports: Safemode; Venue: de Kelder, Amersfoort (Netherlands)
By: Sabine van Gameren

A remarkable night in de Kelder, Amersfoort (Netherlands). While some late Octoberfest is going on at the parkinglot, indoors The Spirit That Guides Us is Playing.

Safemode was the first band of the night, they come from Sweden and did not really have a pleasant start. The music seemed quite simple, far from original and the performance of the guys did not really seem to be entertaining as well. After a while they seem to crawl out of their shell a little more, but besides a few youngsters there are not really much people who show any appreciation for them. A missed shot for the Swedes.
The Spirit That Guides Us is an emo core formation From The Netherlands. The band is formed in 2000 and is known for mixing up the styles a bit. Besides the emo core you may hear indie rock influences as well as progressive rock. This exactly why they are a little different. The guys use melodic vocals right next to screams and in get filled with an ever going tension building instrumental backing. This may be the cause that the audience need some time to get into their sound, it has a certain intensity in it that will not get to you at the first second but needs to grow on you. This has a lot to do with the complexity of it all. The band recently released their 5th album and with it they also try gain awareness for their causes. At the end of the night people could get to know more about it at their merch stand.

Overall a nice show, in which a total of three bands performed, Showbread left out of this review.
