Venue: Rikala, Salo (Finland)

The Finnish melodic death metallers Amorphis have recently released their tenth studio album, “The Beginning of Times”, which is now taking them around Finland before the actual world tour kicks off in October. Tonight they happened to play in the small city of Salo.
The lack of an opening band gave the audience what they were waiting for straight away. From the very first song of the night, the whole venue was packed with excitement and energy spread from the tiny stage Amorphis was performing from. Actually, the stage was barely enough to hold all six members of the band, very often forced to stand in one spot, which is of course something that did affect the performance. Nevertheless, the band was clearly confident in their spots and kept a strong and proud stage presence throughout the whole show. It took some time to completely warm up the crowd, but in the end it showed such an overwhelming response the band was clearly satisfied with. The set list was filled with songs that went through the band’s whole career and turned out to show a rather more metal side of Amorphis music, compared with what you actually get to hear on their albums. Among it all, there’s the skill of harmonizing the guitars with the keyboards arrangements that represents the ultimate ability of the band and its live shows, that are brilliantly delivered with a rather raw kind of refinement and elegance; like tonight’s one, which was just as brilliant. |
