Spiegelkeller is a German band making a mixture of medieval, gothic, metal and humour. The band is founded in 2007 and now comes with their debut album. “Zauber” is out now.
The band makes a wild mix in which the hard guitar riffs come together with female vocals. You must at least appreciate the German language to fall in love with the band. The vocals have a sharp edge which really puts the stress on the words. What is next to the vehemence of the sound, are the use of classic instruments like flute and violin. This brings the medieval element on its place, which is quite present after all.
The use of the instruments may not cover for the fact the songs are not always composed on the most logical way. Often it appears chaotic and the vocals are not that pleasant to listen to. The band is seeking for some originality which they try to implement in the wrong way, so the album turned out less than it could have been. Maybe besides that it is not original, some of the instruments could have been contributing a little less to make it less overkill. “Zauber” is an album that may have needed some more time, some extra listening before it got released. Not really one to recommend.
