19-02-2011 New Idea Society

Venue: Hafen 2, Offenbach (Germany)
By: Nina Mende

Tonight I went out late to see New Idea Society on their current European tour. They played at an art festival in Offenbach/Germany.

An interesting one to say to least. New Idea Society had just released their new album. “Somehow Disappearing”, the most recent album by New Idea Society is the product of two years spent by Chris DeAngelis (Piano and Synthesizers), Alan Cage (Drums), Michael DiBenedetto (Bass) and Mike Law (Vocals, Guitar) writing and recording the feeling of the last second of a moment. New Idea Society was originally founded with a simple enough concept; record songs that are sonically exciting. On their previous full lengths, the lo-fi experimentation of “You Are Awake Or Asleep”, and the mostly live in-studio performances of The World Is Bright And Lonely, were forays into different recording worlds. Then this years “Quiet Prism EP” with washing synths and melodies contained stronger hints of what was to come.
However, with the writing and recording of “Somehow Disappearing”, NIS presents their first fully fleshed out complete album created as a band, with unique sonic recordings that match the song moods and performances that reflect the identities of the individual band members. New Idea Society will tour the U.S., Europe and Japan throughout the Spring 2011 and is excited to add new rhythm section Trevor Watson and Marshall Ryan. Even though the festival was spread out over two storages and several rooms, this one was packed and the air was muggy, the fog didn’t make it better. But no one seemed to care but had a good time instead. Students and all kinds of art lovers were at the festival, mainly because of the movies and exhibitions that were shown at the festival, only some for the bands playing there, but everyone checked the bands out at least and mostly got stuck there to watch the performance till the end.So happened with New Idea Society it seemed. New Idea Society’s music brightened the dark room and filled it with positive vibes. Not that everyone wasn’t in a good mood already, but New Idea Society made it even better. They rocked around on the little stage. Totally passionate about their music you could tell they love what they were doing. Talking and thanking the audience a lot, the stage / audience gap that was minimal to begin with disappeared completely and gave it all a very familiar atmosphere. The audience simply loved them, and New Idea Society gave us love back. It was a wonderful set and totally fitting into the whole artistic environment. New Idea Society is a band playing music that is rare to find. Make sure to check them out!
