Apostate – Trapped in a Sleep

Releasedate: 31-10-2011; Label: Black Art Production
By: Sabine van Gameren

Apostate is a band from Ukraine. Formed in 1993 they have been around for quite some years, but an album was never released so far. In 2010 the band finally came with their debut full length “ Trapped in a Sleep”.

Doom has as typical element that it is quite slow, so 17 years to come with this release seems to suit somehow. Of course in this case we come to the conclusion that some years of separation are part of this 17 years as well, but still the expectations are high set. Thought the band does not really succeed in living up to them with this release. There is Death and Doom blended, coming to a sound that has been heard before. At some point the band failed into getting more elaborated material in the track, as if they have taken an easy way out, while this is not the impression you get looking at this release overall. Some of the choices the band makes are not the most logical ones which leaves you up with guitar parts that may have been placed at a strange way in a song, a bit chaotic.
At the atmospheric side the band get some more credits. It is raw and death, the 90’s influences come forward. They did not beautify it with too many melodic elements but kept it dark and sinister. So maybe the band took a bit of a different approach, it does not really work at all times, but perhaps those who appreciate the raw, basic material will enjoy this band.
