They came from the basement, the literal underground and they’re here to shake your world. Winnipeg natives Vagina Witchcraft may be young, but they are full of gusto. Borne from a love for music as well as singer, poet and activist Kayla Fernandez’ passion and fury, Vagina Witchcraft is doom’s answer to hardcore punk. Equal parts socially conscious furor and doom misery, they are here to educate you while slamming you down with tectonic riffs.
The band is an exercise in bending genres. They take doom, stoner doom and sludge and blend it with noise rock and hardcore. Sabbath-worshipping riffs clash with screaming vocals. Razor-sharp bass does battle with fuzzed out guitars. Little psychedelic touches give the melodies flavor. Miserable moods crawl forward. It’s doom, gloom, fire and fury.
Vagina Witchcraft a rally cry and a personal exorcism in the same instance. A wonderfully-crafted, skillful, emotive and heavy album, it is a showcase of what metal is capable of in the right hands.
