Starmen are releasing their second album, Kiss the Sky, on the 24th of July. The Swedish collective brings us pure stadium rock and genuinely good vibes. If you are into stadium rock, glam and hair metal, this is definitely for you. Put your makeup on, unleash your hair full of spray in the wind, and ride your convertible in the sun, blasting these guys as loud as you can, for sure people will think you came straight from the 87’s.
Sweden has given us many hair metal bands, such as Europe and… That’s mainly it. I checked the Wikipedia page for glam metal in Sweden and couldn’t recognize any other name. But yes, these guys could have chosen Demon, Catman or Spaceman for kiss makeup inspiration, but starchild was the inspiration.
“I am the Stealer” is the starter and reminded me of Van Halen a lot, so it’s not a bad track to start the album and show us what we are up to. Next track, “Dangerous”, follows this Def Leppard style, and again, girls, love and high life.
For me, the greatest moment of the album is most definitely the cover of “All Along the Watchtower” because the song is great, and was not butchered. I can question the style, but these guys are good musicians, despite the sleaziness, However, the biggest feeling that I’m really listening to Def Leppard came with “Kiss the Sky”. The album finishes with “Magical Ride” is about sex, as all the other 80s glam/hair metal bands.
To sum up, this is an album that is sort of cool for the feeling of nostalgia. Would I travel to see them live? Not really. But I think they would be a great hit in the Baltic cruise ships for middle-aged drunk Finns and Swedes. If I see them in whatever the situation, I might enjoy the party.
