The last couple of years Myrkur has been growing in fame. Not everyone was a fan, but it brought a refreshing sound to the scene. Anno 2020 Myrkur leaves the Black Metal influences behind and has the Folk side in an even brighter spotlight. “Folkesange” is her latest release, it is available now.
Using a wide range of traditional instruments you are introduced once again to a soft and dreamy world of Amalie Bruun. Where album opener “Ella” was found on Youtube for quite a while as it was released as a single, the songs that follow up are quite diverse. “Ramund” has a really dark feel over it, while a track like “Harpens Kraft” is a bit more mellow. On “Vinter” she has the piano playing a great role. All the instruments you can hear on this release are played by Amelie herself. It gives the sound a personal touch. She said herself that her pregnancy helped in her getting back to her roots, where Scandinavia folklore has been in a significant place.
If people were expecting Myrkur to go back to earlier albums which drove people’s strongest opinions to come out on all kind of platforms, not always on its most charming way, they may be a bit disappointed. But we can’t imagine people really are when listening to “Folkesange”. With her enchanting voice Amelie captivates us through the whole album. Mesmerizing. One that will probably return to our yearlist.
