Wolfheart is a Finnish metal band formed by Tuomas Saukkonen, who is also known for his many projects like Black Sun Aeon and Before The Dawn. The band started as a solo project in 2013 but became a band in 2014. Now, we have seen several releases of Wolfheart as well and this year another one gets released. It is called “Wolves Of Karelia” and it is available from April 10th.
The guys leave no time to waste in bringing us some heaviness. The first track on the release, “Hail of Steel”, is going strong right away. A bit chaotic at first but towards the end of it you see what was the intention and then you get the feel for it. Also the third track called “Reaper” has quite a heavy body but there are some where the melodic parts come out a bit more. “Ashes” for example. It ends the album but it is a track that sticks in the mind quite well.
If you look at the album as a whole Wolfheart has given this release some dramatic atmosphere. Less cold but bringing a more epic feel to it. Is Wolfheart also affected by climate change? It creeps up slowly, but it is there. Yet, in this case we can’t say we dislike. Lyrically the band is inspired by the winter war (1939-1940). So it is not that strange to have this vehement feel to it.
Hear also some good riffs in for example “The Hammer”. It shows the variety of this album while the sound never breaks into an ego moment for one of the band members, therefore it is a full team effort that has a complete sound.
“Wolves Of Karelia” is an album that is in good line of what Wolfheart has made before. It seems like fans will easily connect to it and appreciate the direction they went with it. Let’s see how this will sound live when the Corona crisis is past us.
