German Doom Metal formation Mirror of Deception has been around for quite some years. Formed in 1990 they celebrate their 20th anniversary of their existence. Though, “A Smouldering Fire” is only their fourth full length release.
This latest release of the traditional Doom Metal band is not one to pick up easy. Nor, they completely lick up to the stereotype of the genre, which makes clear that throughout the years the band have claimed their own face. It is to say that the vocals, by Michael Siffermann, are remarkable. He creates contrast with his voice, making it a bit playful, though he doesn’t bring that deepest voice that you could expect. It is a key element in the sound of this band, you either like it or hate it, but you can’t overcome the fact that he knows what he is doing. As it comes to the instrumental part, you might be surprised with the somehow progressive edge to their input. This makes it even harder to start liking this album from the start. It really needs some time, but when you embrace it, you notice the Germans delivered a splendid album. It is questionable if this is the masterpiece in their collection, people who are familiar with the band will point back to other releases for that perhaps, but maybe that is also just a matter of time.
