Pyogenesis – A Silent Soul Screams Loud

Label: AFM Records
Releasedate: 24.01.2020

Pyogenesis, a band I had never heard of even though they have been in existence in several line-ups, pleasantly surprises with a fresh rock album.

‘Survival of the fittest’, the first track is a fast track with a high tempo. Crisp vocal, well composed and clear riffs. Going over into the second song ‘Mother Bohemia’, I love this track, fast percussion and guitars with grunts, combined with clear vocals. The tempo of the song remains high for about 3 minutes where the last 40-odd seconds are a bit of an extended outtro.

The intro of the next song ‘I can’t breathe (prologue)’ sounds a bit like the intro of Cher’s hit ‘Believe’. It flows seamlessly into ‘I can’t breathe (monologue) and it is a heavy laden ballad-like song, until the heavy guitars take over and the vocals change tact. Musical arrangement sounds very much like how The Gathering in their debut years sounded.

‘High old times’ starts off with some nice riffs with a 80s/90s sounding vocal echo. Saying that it does sounds a lot like the rock of the 80s/90s like Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and such. Good sounding track, even though it sounds like a track from when I was in my 20s.

‘Modern Prometheus’ featuring Chris Harms of Lords of the Lost is a good sounding track, but again you can hear the influences of other artists. I won’t tell you which I recognise, I will leave that to you. Well-composed piece of music, combining the vocals of Flo and Chris against a slow rock track.

In the next track they kick it up a gear, ‘Will I ever feel the same’ is fast and rocks a bit more. As with all the previous tracks it all sounds too familiar like other bands.

The last song on this album called ‘The Capital’ is an everlasting 14 minutes 20 seconds long! Starts off with backing vocals against light keyboard tones – very much like most female fronted symphonic rock bands. Starting of like a ballad and then flowing into their familiar style of fast paced guitars and drums. About 5 mins in there is an acoustic guitar interlude going into a choral gothic chant. The proper song continues at 6 mins 30 secs in; strong vocals with acoustic instruments eventually flowing into a guitar solo. From 7mins 15secs the song never picks up pace from here and the remainder is an instrumental outtro of 7minutes.

To be honest I expected more when I first listened to this album. However after the 3rd or 4th, it became a bit mundane and too recognisable with older tracks from other artists. Not a bad effort though.

Flo Schwarz – Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards
Jan Räthje – Drums
