Releasedate: 19-07-2010; Label: Doomentia Records
By: Sabine van Gameren
Quite a new formation is what you should think, but Horn of The Rhino was formerly known as just Rhino. Under that name they have released two full lengths and now under their new name “Weight of Coronation” is born.
The band gives Thrash metal, combined with post and sludge. Quite deep sound comes with them. First thing that slept of the trail are the vocals which are tedious at some point. I would rather compare it to a sheep than a rhino, but perhaps there are people who might like this edge on it. In general there could have come more power from the vocal side, after a while the voice starts to bore and eventually irritate. Instrumentally, the band made a better impression on me. Unfortunately never as aggressive as it could be but staying more in that dark drone area. They try to built up tensions and they might not go to the extremes with that, it somehow makes what people will like about this album most.
Horn of The Rhino is not the typical sound as many have, but somehow comes down to a strange mix of genres that do not get adopted easily. Listening to the album some more might help with embracing it, but it is to wonder if people will take that effort. What is missing is that one killer song that shows everyone that they are worth to look into further. “Weight of Coronation” is made for those experimental listeners who dare to try something different and go for the unknown.
