Votum – Metafiction

Releasedate: 01-03-2010; Label: Mystic
By: Sabine van Gameren

Votum is a Polish formation started in 2003. This year the band comes with their album “Metafiction”. It is the second full length release of the band.

Prog rock, Poland… that obviously sounds into the direction of Riverside. Well, maybe Riverside inspires more bands, Votum has its share of them as well. Here and there the influences of other big names can be heard clearly as well. So, ok maybe this band doesn’t bring much new, but at least the quality is good. Intruding vocals, vertiginously working on your mind, bringing either peace and awareness. The bands instrumentals should perhaps try to find and maintain an own face. The originality is frugal and maybe more depth in it would keep you into the atmosphere longer, as the vocals give an opportunity to fall into it, but the instruments won’t pick it up.
Overall the album is nice and easy to listen to, listeners who are not die-hard into the genre won’t be bothered too much by the faceless side of the band and just enjoy the warm atmosphere that the music brings. These guys maybe need some more time to grow into it, the basics are there, the idea is set but they seem struggling with making that idea more concrete and puzzle the pieces together until it fits. Now there still seem to be some holes in it, but perhaps a next release will blow you away totally.
