Pepa Päivinen is coming from Finland making Jazz music. The latest release comes from end 2009 and is called: “North Pipe”.
Pepa formed his first trio in 1999, currently he forms a quartet with Timo Kämäräinen (guitar), Ville Huolman (bass) and Mikko Hassinen (drums). The album “North Pipe” starts quite calm, but gets more playful towards the end. With his saxophone on the lead, Pepa sets the tone that slightly gets followed, rather back upped by the rest of the musicians. There are some moments that the other instruments get a chance to step more forward in the light as well, but in general it is the saxophone which most dominant.
The guys work with long lasting climaxes, holding on to their highlights to give you plenty chances to enjoy it before calmer parts return. In a couple of songs there is a cello used that brings an extra element to the sound. “North Pipe” is an inspiring album, made with the intention to entertain the listener. For our guess, a good tip for North Sea Jazz next year, an act that would do certainly good there.
