Istapp is one of the few names that comes to mind when we talk about melodic black metal. Formed in 2005, these Swedes have always managed to bring the winter with each release. After a 4-year of silence, they are back with “The Insidious Star”.
Winter is coming indeed… “The Insidious Star” delivers nine tracks with the perfect balance of melodic elements and black metal. There is certainly a development in the band’s character compared to the previous release “Frostbiten”. The biggest highlight is the combination of the harsh and clean vocals. This has always been an aspect I enjoyed in Istapp’s style but this is crafted even more epic and professionally with a better production in this release. Another highlight is definitely the riffs, bringing us the breeze as well as the band’s perspective on the black metal genre. The melodies flow so smoothly and stay in the listener’s mind and so it will be quite hard to choose a favorite in general!
“The Insidious Star” might be my favorite from Istapp and is already in my list of the best of 2019. Definitely recommended to the lovers of winter and this genre.
