Glitter Wizard – Opera Villains

Label:Heavy Psych Sounds
Releasedate: 20.04.2019

Glitter Wizard release their fourth album Opera Villains on the 4/20. Coincidence? Not really. Their are a proper, full fledged stoner rock, psych, glam punk whatever you want to call it, that pays follows the cult of the smokey gods. Smokey god is a track title to a song in their previous album Hollow Earth Tour. And that album was one of the best revelation that I happen to listen during this year, though it was released in 2016. Glitter Wizard come from San Francisco, California, USA. Their sound is definitely thrilling, and while not heavy on his own, is incredibly fun to listen. What to say about this album, Opera Villains?

All this album is a musical mess, but a cool mess. One of those musical orgies that will hit you in the face with glitter, rainbows, a slap and maybe a blast of funny smokes and will leave you thinking… What has just happened? This is the second album they did after switching Archers Guild Records to Heavy Psych Sounds. They are one stop shop for the lovers of all styles, Glam rock, Punk, Prog Rock, Psych Rock, Metal, you name it. If I will start trying to get to name this style I will have to write a 30 pages article. I think they call themselves “Pink Metal”. And I get it.

The first track, “A spell so evil” is not a kicker. The second track “The Toxic Lady” is. The instrument that stands out constantly are the keyboards by Doug Graves. “The March of the Red Cloaks” is the instrumental blast. Quick and dirty, 2:24 mix of every sound you can imagine. Dead man wax is the closer that we will get to metal in it’s thrashy form, and the following track, Hall of the Oyster King, is an ode to progressive rock, any reminiscences to the “Hall of the Mountain King” are purely intentional in this one. The front man Wendy Stonehenge must be awesome going live with this. “Warm blood” is an hell of a conclusion to a ride that I was not expecting to be so short.

My evaluation is definitely positive. I have to say that my favorite of their albums is still Hollow Earth Tour, but I also happen to like more and more Opera Villains every time I hear it. You will figure out the influences from every type of rock music of the 20th century and a proper revival. Ultimately, my only problem with this album is that it is too short. 35.26 minutes of awesome and it should have been more. Anyway, I would see the presentation of this album anywhere. If I can recommend the venue, a burlesque theater will do the trick perfectly.
