Band GOLD is one of those that amazed us more than once by their live performances. The Dutch formation has been doing quite some of those and with releases they have a constant flow also. “Why Aren’t You Laughing” is the latest of this group, just released about a week ago.
The album starts with what is one of the highlights of the album. The track “He Is Not” is setting the tone, it immediatly brings you in the melancholic, dark mood that comes with the album. Starting with a highlight is not always favorable for the rest of the release, but GOLD managed to have some more of that in their album so one would be fine. The titletrack is also an example of a song that speaks for the band. It is straightforward, the message is not hidden in languistic tricks, one get it. And the guitars are often driving you with the stress of them. Well thought compositions are key and give the band their own face.
All the songs are logically following onto eachother, no big changes in mood and this flow keeps the album close to you when listening. It is an ongoing thing that you want to listen to as a whole. The magnificent vocalist Milena captivates the listening easily with her calm and soothin voice, while the words can bring so much despairation. An interesting playfield!
While I tipped The Phantom of Phobos earlier as yearlist material, who would have guessed we came across another one so soon. An excellent release that is worth the investment!
