Atomic – Pet Variations

Label: Odin Records
Releasedate: 15-02-2019

Atomic is a Jazz formation with background both in Sweden as in Norway. The band takes a contemporary approach with their music. The album they recently released is called “Pet Variations” and is available now.

Listening to the song “Art” I had to think of Danse Macabre. It is however a composition by Steve Lacy. Taking the classic feel making it more contemporay bit without losing touch with it. What speaks for this formation is that they never go too far from reality with their music, it is still very listenable.
Some of the chosen compositions are more recognizable to a larger audience. Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson is a name that is widely known for example. But perhaps an even more remarkable track is the one called “Un Grand Sommeil Noir”. It is a piece you can enjoy quietly, the greatest moments are in the details here.

The whole tracklist shows different sides of Atomic but come together in the overall sound. Some remarkable choices they make are beneficial to the outcome being so entertaining.

Atomic has over a dozen of releases out there, the formation has set themselves a name in Norway and beyond. “Pet Variations” is an album that gives the impression it has a lit bit for each of the musicians in there. Each their favorites. Suits them well, some daring choices.
